Real page speed: Core Web Vitals

A speed test in a lab tells you how fast a page could be. What counts is how fast it is for your real visitors, on their own phones and connections.

Why it matters

  • Google uses the Core Web Vitals, measured on real Chrome users, as part of its page experience signals.
  • A slow page loses visitors before it has even finished loading, especially on mobile.

The three measures

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): the time until the main content is displayed. Good: 2.5 seconds or less.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page reacts to a tap or a click. Good: 200 milliseconds or less.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the page moves around while it loads. Good: 0.1 or less.

Google judges these values at the 75th percentile: three visits out of four must meet the threshold.

How to improve them

  • Compress and resize your images, and give them a width and a height.
  • Load only the scripts and fonts you really need, and load the rest later.
  • Use caching and a fast host to cut the server's response time.
  • Reserve space for banners, embedded content and ads so the page does not jump.

What Freqo Compass checks

  • LCP, INP and CLS measured on your own visitors by the Freqo script, over 28 days, at the 75th percentile
  • Pages whose server takes more than 1.5 seconds to answer
